Mascot History

Believe it or not...Ohio State University was without a mascot for over 100 years. In 1965, an Ohio State art student, Ray Bourhis, was amazed that his school was without a mascot. The only animal mascot that Ray thought would make sense was a Buck Deer, this didn't seem quite right. Then, an idea of a "Buckeye" was devised. Later that year, a naming contest was held and "Brutus Buckeye" came to life. Did you know? The first "Brutus Buckeye" costume was made of papier-mache and weighed eighty-five pounds.
