Mascot History

After triumphing over the University of Mississippi in 1905, students prominently displayed a bulldog puppy during a victory parade. Twenty-one years later, during a pregame rally against the University of Alabama, another bulldog made an appearance. Other nicknames such as the Aggies and the Maroons were given to Mississippi State, but what stuck was the bulldog.

A heritage then began of Bully, a live AKC registered English bulldog as the school mascot in 1935. On December 9, 1993, Bully XV died of natural causes at age 11. Bully XVI now embodies the spirit of Mississippi State that lives on and on.
